When I first started the writing process, I had my doubts about writers’ conferences. It sounded like a place I would get lost: hundreds of desperate authors elbowing each other out of the way in an effort to catch a few patchy words with the handful of agents invited.
In spite of my doubts, I registered for the SCBWI Golden Gate Conference at Asilomar two years ago, and thankfully, the visual I painted above was far from the truth. I found the conference invigorating, dynamic, and most surprisingly, supportive. I would highly recommend this conference.
The registration starts in November, and you can find the info here: http://scbwisf.com/2010/10/golden-gate-conference-at-asilomar-2011/ If you’re thinking of giving a writers’ conference a try, this is a good one. Plus, you can’t beat the natural beauty of the Asilomar beach landscape.
